Bring Back the Practical Gifts: Why Babies Don’t Always Need Another Toy
Share
I was regularly given socks by my parents. Birthdays, Christmas, you name it: there was a good chance a pair of socks would make an appearance. I’m sure plenty of you can relate.
At the time, they weren’t exactly the gift I was rushing to unwrap. But looking back, I get it. They were useful. They were needed. And they actually got worn.
Now, when I think about gifts for babies and toddlers, I find myself wondering: can we bring a little of that practical gifting back?
Useful doesn’t mean thoughtless
A practical gift says, “I’ve thought about your everyday life.” It might be the next size up in sleepsuits, some cosy socks, a lovely bib or a little plate ready for their next mealtime adventure.
Those things might not flash or sing, but they can become part of the moments that fill a baby’s day: getting dressed, sitting down for breakfast, trying a new food or winding down for bed.
There’s something rather lovely about giving a gift that gets reached for again and again.
Does every present need to have batteries?
There’s nothing wrong with toys. A much-loved toy can bring so much joy, and play is a lovely part of childhood. But another plastic, noisy toy isn’t the only way to make a little one feel special.
We’ve all seen it: a present gets opened, the buttons get pressed, and an hour later the excitement has moved on. Sometimes to the box it came in.
Meanwhile, the parents are wondering where to put it. And whether it has an off switch.
Not every toy ends up forgotten, of course. But not every gift needs to be a toy in the first place.
A little help for the parents, too
Buying for a baby often means buying something their parents will wash, organise, store and use with them. Choosing something they actually need can be a thoughtful way to care for the whole family.
If you’re unsure what to choose, ask: “Is there anything they need at the moment?” It doesn’t spoil the thought behind the gift. It helps make sure your thoughtfulness lands in the right place.
Perhaps they’re about to start weaning. Perhaps all their bibs are permanently in the wash. Perhaps they’ve somehow outgrown every pair of socks overnight.
A useful present can be a small thing that makes a busy day a little easier.
Practical can still feel special
A beautiful colour, a thoughtful note or something chosen for the stage a little one is growing into can make an everyday essential feel like a proper treat.
For a baby starting their food journey, you could put together a little mealtime gift with a bib, bowl or plate. For a toddler finding their independence, something for their place at the table can feel wonderfully grown-up.
At Tiny Babas, we love the idea of gifting for those everyday moments. Baby feeding and tableware might not be the loudest presents in the pile, but they can still be chosen with plenty of love.
Let’s give useful gifts their moment
This isn’t a call to ban toys or take the fun out of gifting. It’s simply a reminder that you have options.
You don’t have to choose another noisy toy because that feels like the “proper” thing to buy a baby or toddler. Something practical is a perfectly lovely gift in its own right.
Maybe our parents were onto something with those socks after all.
